		The Residential Tenancies Amendment Bill passed unanimously by Parliament on May 31 requiring smoke alarms and insulation in rental properties. Smoke alarms must be installed in all rental homes by 1 July 2016. All new smoke alarms need to be the 10-year, long-life models. Talking to MBIE representatives following the passing of the Bill, NZPIF learned that the regulations regarding how many smoke alarms and where these should be placed have yet to be announced. In the meantime members of Property Investors' Associations affiliated to the NZPIF can currently purchase long life smoke alarms recommended by the NZ Fire Service through the NZPIF website for $25 per unit and, from Monday June 6, for $27 per unit.
